Gaia's/Ortega's Rick Dom (GQ)

Kit Review

Straight build + Seals

The Rick Dom Gaia's/Ortega's has been released as the 9th HG kit in "Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX." It's a freshly redesigned Rick Dom done up in the GQuuuuuuX style, and it comes with a quirky concept — an extra leg mounted on the back.

First off, even though this is a 3,000-yen-range HG, it comes in a large box that's usually reserved for 4,000-yen-class kits with more volume. The part count is on the higher side for an HG, but it's probably the sheer bulk of the parts themselves that called for the bigger box. The Dom's characteristically thick legs — and there are three of them — mean the parts take up a lot of space on their own. Thanks to that, it feels surprisingly generous for an HG, and 3,300 yen honestly feels like a bargain.

For its size, the articulation is actually better than you'd expect — though the polycap-less joints feel stiff, much like some of the earlier GQuuuuuuX kits. It's not bad enough that you'd need to sand down the joint pins, but it does make posing a little awkward. To avoid any accidental breakage, I'd recommend holding both sides of each joint firmly with both hands and bending carefully. The ankle range of motion is also limited and the joints are stiff, so getting both feet to sit completely flat on the ground isn't easy. That said, the feet are large enough that even with shaky contact, the pose doesn't collapse easily.

In terms of sculpt, the sole verniers are a real highlight — they have fantastic depth, and you can rotate each row of verniers inside the sole slightly to adjust the angle. The third leg on the back can be lowered into a tripod pose, though it's a bit short, so you'll need to bend both knees and lower the body to get all three feet on the ground. As for weapons, you get a newly designed Giant Bazooka, two heat sabers, and an electro-haken with a wire lead.

So all in all, this is a modern Dom that delivers nicely in terms of sculpt, volume, and gimmicks. The stiff joints are a bit of a letdown, but honestly — a Dom with three legs? That alone is enough to snap you wide awake. It's a genuinely fresh kit. :-)
