YMS-08B Dom Test Type

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

The 7th entry in the HG The Origin series is the YMS-08B Dom Test Type, an original design kit. As you can see, it only shares a concept with the existing Dom — the design itself is completely different, and honestly it looks way too sleek and cool (lol) to be called a test type compared to the original Dom.

First off, the surprisingly wide variety of molded colors means the straight build + seals result looks really solid. The combination of dark and light armor tones gives it a feel that's very different from the original Dom.

The articulation is particularly impressive — the limbs folding up completely is just the baseline, and thanks to the flexible waist and ankle joints, you can pull off dynamic poses that would've been unthinkable on the original Dom. The ankles especially are jaw-dropping — the range of motion is almost bewildering given how large the feet are. It completely shatters any preconceptions you had about Dom articulation. Easily A-grade joints.

As a bonus feature, the chest armor comes in two versions — ground combat type and space configuration — and you can choose which one to build. The ground combat type looks far more elaborate and distinctive, so both the box art and the manual lean toward recommending that one. On top of that, the mono-eye uses a mechanism that goes beyond the usual left-right movement, allowing it to move in all directions including up and down.

It's an A-grade kit with a sleek, fresh design backed up by outstanding articulation and solid joint strength. If the photos have caught your eye, I'd strongly recommend picking this one up. When it comes to side-story kits, a bold full redesign like this honestly ends up being more fun than a subtle reinterpretation of an existing unit. :-)
