RGM-79HC GM Guard Custom

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

The GM Guard Custom has been released as the 22nd kit in the HG Origin series. It's a mobile suit that combines an Origin-style GM with a massive Guardian Shield, and it looks fantastic with its sleek design and color scheme.

The basic construction and joint style are similar to previous kits, offering great articulation and solid joint strength that makes posing a lot of fun. The waist can bend forward nearly 90 degrees in particular, so you can even pull off a deep kneeling pose with the body fully hunched over. That makes it easy to naturally recreate all kinds of poses with the Guardian Shield out front.

You can also remove the forearm structure and attach a separate handle and beam parts to use it as a beam dagger, and the head visor moves up and down. Overall the build quality is excellent, but one downside is that the hand parts don't grip the shield very securely. Given how large the Guardian Shield is, it's kind of unavoidable — the back of the hand and the hand parts tend to come apart and drop the shield every time you change a pose. In my case I just went ahead and glued them together for peace of mind. ^^;

There's also a hip joint articulation gimmick that extends the range of motion in the legs even further, though due to the design, the front skirt can get a bit in the way when you try to raise it, so you have to be careful there. Anyway, there are a few minor gripes, but this is a top-tier HG kit with a sleek style and excellent articulation — if you like the look of it, it's definitely worth building. :-)
