Triple Dom ~ Jet Stream Attack [Black Tri Star Set]

Kit Review

Straight Build +
Panel Lining

Alongside the release of the high-quality HGUC Dom, the Triple Dom set — containing three Doms in one box — was also released. This kit differs from the existing HGUC Dom kit in the following ways.

<Changes>
- Contents: Three identical HGUC Dom kits + additional parts
- Rick Dom parts have been removed from the runners on all three kits (feet, rear skirt, beam bazooka, backpack + verniers). Can only be assembled as a Dom.
- All molded colors changed to darker shades.
- One heat saber is molded in light blue.

<Additional Parts for the Triple Dom>
- One set of hand parts for Ortega
- Missile + smoke clear parts for recreating the bazooka firing scene
- Jet Stream Attack stand in semi-transparent material
- Sticker seals not included with the HGUC

Since the body is completely identical to the HGUC Dom with only the molded colors being different, please refer to the HGUC Dom/Rick Dom

for information on the body itself. In the Triple Dom, the molded colors have been changed to darker shades — and as you can see in the photos above, they've shifted to a feel very similar to the MG Dom ver. O.Y.W. It gives off a calm, weighty impression.

Unlike the HGUC which could be swapped between a Dom and Rick Dom, the machines the Black Tri Stars originally piloted were Doms — so the Triple Dom runners have had all the Rick Dom parts completely removed, meaning you can only build them as Doms. In exchange, there are quite a few bonus parts included, such as the Jet Stream Attack stand, hand parts, sticker seals, and the bazooka firing recreation parts.

So if it were just three plain Doms, it should've been 1,700 × 3 = 5,100 yen based on the HGUC price — but with the Rick Dom parts removed and various bonuses thrown in, it launched at a reasonable ¥4,000. Pricewise, I'd say it's not too bad at all.

The HGUC Dom itself is already top-notch quality, so the biggest appeal of this kit is probably the ability to display the Jet Stream Attack scene using the surprisingly useful stand. And for fans of the Black Tri Stars, this is obviously an amazing gift.

At first I thought building three identical kits back-to-back might get a bit tedious.. (and in practice, since it was released at the same time as the HGUC Dom, I ended up building four of them at once) — but once you actually get into it, the kit is so clean and satisfying to build that there's plenty of fun to be had. If anything, the panel lining was what started to feel a little repetitive rather than the assembly itself... (especially those 14 hands..;;)

In the end, there's nothing to fault quality-wise, but whether it's worth investing ¥4,000 is going to vary a lot from person to person. I'd imagine plenty of people would rather pick up several different kits or one higher-end MG instead of three copies of the same kit.

In that sense, I think this HGUC Triple Dom set is — while yes, it does add another entry to the product line by reusing an existing kit — a kind of fan-service set from Bandai for the old-school fans. Unlike something like the old HGUC Operation V set which just swapped the molded colors and tossed in some stickers, this one comes packed with a generous selection of extra options, so it really does feel like genuine service :-)
