1/100

Graze Standard/Commander Type

Kit Review

This is the second release in the Iron-Blooded Orphans 1/100 series, and just like the HG, we get the Graze Standard/Commander Type. As expected, it comes with a full-body frame structure. The overall sculpt quality and color separation are on a completely different level compared to the old 1/100 No Grade kits.

First off, the build process is smooth and satisfying with everything snapping together cleanly — the feel in your hands is honestly a step above most MG kits. It actually feels a bit more structurally solid and cleanly engineered than the 1/100 Barbatos. Though that might just come down to design differences rather than engineering... hmm.

Both the full-body frame's detail and articulation are top-notch, but unfortunately once you put all the armor on, the hip joint range of motion drops significantly and the overall articulation ends up being pretty average. There is a fan-shaped pivot gimmick in the hip joints to boost mobility, but the thigh armor is so chunky that it's really hard to raise the legs — that's just how the design works out.

Compared to the HG, the differences include the addition of poseable verniers on the rear legs, the ability to configure the rifle into a short rifle form, and the waist cylinders being fully articulated and nicely done. Also, the gimmick of opening the head cover to expose the spherical sensor is properly reproduced as a working mechanism — on the HG, it felt like the head cover was just loosely clipped on and forced into position.

Also, the HG Graze came with both the space and ground boosters included at the same time. With the 1/100, you swap out just the middle joint parts to selectively attach one set of boosters. For a typical Bandai kit, it's normal to only include one set of shared parts like this, so it seems like the HG Graze was unusually generous in throwing in two sets of the same parts. ^^;

So while this kit really shines with its excellent frame structure and parts breakdown, the articulation after completion feels a bit below expectations. For some reason, it's not that easy to pull off dynamic poses compared to the HG, so if you're someone who really values a high level of poseability, it's probably best not to get your hopes up too much.

There are also left arm parts included to recreate Barbatos Form 1/Form 2. My guess is that since you'd be using the Graze's shoulder as well when building Form 2, they threw these parts into the 1/100 Graze instead of the 1/100 Barbatos so you'd use them together. (Is this all just a setup to make you buy both?!)

Anyway, as expected, it feels almost too high-quality to be called a No Grade 1/100. I was a bit disappointed with the articulation after finishing it, but thanks to the premium full-body frame and the satisfying build experience, this was a pretty enjoyable kit to build and review. It also feels a bit more stable than the 1/100 Barbatos, so if you find recent MGs precise but somehow overly complex and a bit stale, this might be a great kit to try something a little different. :-)
