Gundam Barbatos 6th Form

Kit Review

Following the HG, the fully-armed 6th Form of Barbatos has been released in 1/100 scale as well. Basically it's a full-option kit where parts to recreate the 6th and 5th Forms have been added to the 1/100 Gundam Barbatos kit (4th Form), but since the foot parts are missing, you can't actually build the standard 4th Form with this kit.

First off, the key features of the 6th Form — the pointed feet, shoulder/forearm armor, and side skirts — are all cleanly reproduced. On top of the wrench mace, the regular mace that was disappointingly absent from the standard 1/100 Gundam Barbatos has been added here too. The newly included wrench mace can spread open at the front just like in the show, and unlike the HG, it has a gimmick where the saw blade section automatically pops out. The regular mace also lets you push the handle upward to extend the spike on top even further — overall, there's a nice range of extra gimmicks that really feel worthy of the 1/100 scale.

The biggest letdown with the standard 1/100 Gundam Barbatos was the joint strength, so I was even more worried about that with the more heavily armed 6th Form. Fortunately, it seems like the polycaps have been revised somewhat, and it actually feels sturdier than the slimmer standard version. That said, it's not the tight, solid feel you'd get from a high-end MG — it's more like "good enough to hold together." Still, the joint strength at the shoulders and forearms remains lacking, so when you hold up a big heavy weapon like the mace, the arms droop down on their own, making it pretty tough to pull off dynamic poses.

Beyond that, various parts to recreate the 5th Form are included, just like with the HG. You can go straight to the 5th Form Ground Combat configuration with these, but for the standard 5th Form you'll need to borrow the side binders from the 1/100 Schwalbe Graze and the foot parts from the standard 1/100 Gundam Barbatos. That was the same situation with the HG, but one difference here is that the arm for mounting the side binders — which had to come from a separate option kit in the HG — is included right out of the box with the 1/100.

Anyway, the 6th Form, which feels like the definitive final version of Barbatos, is a faithfully well-executed kit, and the overall quality is clearly cleaner and better than older 1/100 kits. Sure, the so-so joint strength is still a gripe, but it's not like the thing flops around like a ragdoll either, so it's honestly a tough call... I just wish the joints were designed to be a bit tighter, though I can't help but wonder if they intentionally dialed down the quality to leave room for the MG. :-)
