Gundam Kimaris Booster Unit Type

Kit Review

This is the Gundam Kimaris released in 1/100 scale following the HG, and it comes as a combined pack called the "Booster Unit Type" — which includes the booster unit that was sold separately as an optional kit for the HG version.

First off, true to the lore, the frame reuses that of Gundam Barbatos, so the 1/100 Gundam Barbatos frame runners are included here with just the molded color changed. That said, the head and foot frames have been swapped out for Kimaris-specific ones, and additional frame structures have been added for the backpack and knee areas.

In terms of detail, there's a noticeably different feel compared to previous kits — the surface molding is far more intricate and densely packed than on the 1/100 Barbatos or Graze. Panel lining takes about 2–3 times longer as a result, but thanks to that, the finished look has a level of refinement that rivals an MG.

Since it reuses the 1/100 Barbatos frame, it carries over the same traits — good articulation but somewhat iffy joint strength. That said, the kit's center of gravity is reasonably well balanced, so standing it upright is no problem at all. Dynamic poses are another story though, especially anything involving a forward thrust with the large Gungnir — the shoulder joint strength just isn't there for it T_T You can work around it by resting the butt end of the Gungnir handle lightly on the knee as shown in the photos above, but either way, the joint strength feeling underwhelming relative to the large weapon seems to be becoming a tradition with the 1/100 Iron-Blooded Orphans kits -_-

Beyond that, gimmicks like exposing the slash discs on the shoulders and opening the leg armor to deploy the verniers are all faithfully reproduced, though functionally there isn't a huge difference from the HG. The HG was already so well done that there probably wasn't much left to upgrade in the 1/100 ;

All in all, it's a solid and clean 1/100 kit, and with more refined molding than other kits plus the booster unit included, it's definitely worth picking up. If you're an Iron-Blooded Orphans fan, this is a fun kit you can enjoy without many complaints — as long as you can overlook the still-iffy joint strength :-)
