Plugging the peg into the palm does give a solid grip, but...
...as you can see in the arrow photo above, the holding angle ends up rotated 90 degrees, which looks pretty awkward.
On the other hand, you can just ignore the peg and have the hand hold it naturally in line with the fingers — that looks much more natural. (top)
In fact, even the official sample photos show it held parallel to the hand like that.
It really seems like a design mistake where the peg was put in the wrong orientation.. ;;
Only two hand types are included — an open hand and a weapon-holding hand — and since there's only one back-of-hand cover part, you have to tediously swap it back and forth.
It would've been so much easier if they'd just included duplicates, but every now and then they can be a bit stingy like this..
