Hyakuri

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

The 5th entry in the Iron-Blooded Orphans HG series is the Hyakuri. It's a unit known for its flat, massive backpack — and because of that backpack, the center of gravity is completely thrown off in a gravity environment, making it a space-use-only unit. It's the one that gave Barbatos a hard time back in episode 7.

The unique design will probably be a love-it-or-hate-it thing for some people, but overall it has this quirky yet refined feel to it. The big, flat backpack — almost like something out of an Ewok design — completely throws off the center of gravity, making it absolutely impossible for the kit to stand on its own. That's why a clear stand is included right in the box, which you plug into the bottom of the backpack to prop up the rear.

There were kits with a vaguely similar design concept in Gundam Reconguista in G as well, but the Hyakuri from Iron-Blooded Orphans feels a bit more solid and put-together. More than anything, the kit quality is really excellent — the parts layout, joint strength, and articulation all give you a very satisfying build experience.

Just like Barbatos and Graze, the Hyakuri stands out for having a full-body frame even as an HG kit. The armor on the torso and legs separates completely, but the shoulders and forearms are a bit ambiguous — the armor doesn't come off entirely there, so it's not 100% removable. Still, the fact that it gives you this level of skeletal frame is pretty impressive quality for an HG.

As a special gimmick, you can stow the arms inside the backpack to recreate the flight mode, and the backpack covers used for that can be detached and mounted on the forearms as knuckle shields.

One minor gripe is that the shoulders tend to pop off during posing — though that's a common issue with quite a few HG kits that use the newer polycaps. Other than that, this is a really clean, hard-to-fault kit. It's not exactly a major mobile suit, but thanks to its unique personality and satisfying build feel, it's actually a kit I'd recommend even over the Graze. :-)
