Graze Ein

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

The Graze Ein — the final boss of Iron-Blooded Orphans Season 1 — has been released as an HG kit. If you've seen the show, you'll know it's an enlarged, modified version of the Graze with a design height of over 22 meters, making it a big boy. And sure enough, even at 1/144, it comes out as an absolutely massive kit that rivals other 1/100s.

The basic skeleton centered on the body reuses runners from the existing HG Graze, but thanks to the elongated limbs and armor, almost all of the parts are newly tooled. I had a feeling it'd be big before I even started building, but the finished size still caught me off guard. A 1/144 HG kit for just ¥1400 and it's this huge... if size is your measure of value for money, this is absolutely the best kit out there.

The overall quality is also clean and up to par with the latest HG kits — it shows excellent articulation and reasonably solid joints, and above all, the sense of volume really matches its size. The pile bunker on the forearm is done as a sliding mechanism, the shoulder machine guns are detachable, and the feet can be swapped out for pointed versions to recreate the drill kick.

That said, trying to pull off a 1/100-scale size at ¥1400 does mean a few corners were cut. The hands are each molded as a single part, which is pretty rare, and you can see some hollow areas on the palms — a bit of a shame. The feet come in two swappable versions (spread and closed), but given the size, it seems like they could've easily been made articulated instead. And the shoulder machine guns — the cover is hinged, but the guns themselves are just clip-on; looking at the structure, it seems like adding just a part or two could've made them fully retractable. These feel like compromises made to leave room for the 1/100 version, but then again, that's probably why we get this great size-to-price ratio at ¥1400, so it's hard to complain too much. ^^;

Anyway, if you've had your eye on the big and beefy Graze Ein, this is a kit I'd highly recommend — and especially if you love getting a large kit for the price, this is definitely one you don't want to miss. :-)
