Kotobukiya Full Metal Panic

Plan-1055 Belial

Kit Review

Straight build

Kotobukiya's Full Metal Panic lineup gets a new kit with the release of Belial, the ultimate boss of the series. Stylistically it looks like something straight out of Gundam AGE, and it's got a very different vibe compared to the existing Arbalest or Laevatein kits.

The parts follow a typical Kotobukiya-style build, with a large number of pieces for its size that come together to give it great depth and proportions. The articulation is also impressive — the limbs fold up nicely like a top-tier Gunpla kit — though the joint strength feels a bit too stiff. Sure, that's better than being loose, but with the shoulders in particular, the force balance can get thrown off while rotating them, which can cause the arms to pop off.

The bow-type weapon, the Arbalest Bane Bow, can transform between a folded and an extended form, while the shoulder binders and the forearm 40mm machine guns use an add-on parts approach to recreate their deployed states. There's also a new style of stand joint part included, which attaches securely behind the hip joint and lets you pull off stable mid-air poses.

Aside from the overly stiff joints, it's a decent quality kit — though as usual, the value proposition of ¥6,800 for what's essentially an HG-sized kit is a bit rough. That said, if you're a die-hard Full Metal Panic fan, you're probably just happy it exists at all. :-)
