Kotobukiya Border Break

Saber Opeining Movie Color

Kit Review

Straight build

The 7th kit in the Border Break lineup is the Saviour Opening Movie Color, which really shows off that black charisma. The slightly gloss-injected surface gives it a subtle sheen, and according to the original design there are supposed to be green markings all over the body — but since they're not even provided as decals, it feels like the attitude is basically "if you want them, paint them yourself" (-.-;)..;

The Border Break series tends to reuse parts quite a bit, and at first glance the Saviour looks like just another variation kit — but look around every corner and it's actually pretty much a brand new design. The style may look similar, but the only parts shared with other kits are the Frame Arms inner frame and a single runner from the Zebra. It's nice to finally get a fresh new design kit, but on the flip side, you could argue it's a bit of a problem that it doesn't really feel all that new ^^;

The basic internal construction isn't all that different from other Border Break kits, so it delivers pretty flexible and natural articulation. That said, all the stuff hanging off the body seems to weigh it down a bit — the joints don't feel quite as tight as on other kits. Not loose enough to be a real problem, but they do give you a slightly uneasy feeling.

There are a few new changes in this kit — first off, it ditches the angular shared Frame Arms hand parts in favor of new rounded ones. On top of that, the side vernier open gimmick, which was always awkwardly done as a swap-out piece, has been boldly(?) redesigned as a movable joint. It makes you wish they'd done it this way from the start — looking back at the previous Border Break kits where you had to swap pieces in and out one by one is a little disappointing now.

On top of that, the first-run limited edition includes a small booklet collecting the Border Break box art. It's not exactly a huge bonus, but it's a fun little extra nonetheless.

The Border Break series is a lineup built around a solid Frame Arms-based body and flashy styling, and if you like the look, it's definitely a fun build. The Border Break game itself isn't well known locally so it's not exactly mainstream, but Sega's signature compact, angular design has a genuinely stylish feel to it. The Saviour Opening Movie Color is no different — if the style appeals to you, it's a kit you can enjoy without any major headaches :-)
