Scopedog Turbo Custom

Kit Review

Straight build

The Scopedog Turbo Custom from Votoms has been released in D-Style, and it's turned out to be a masterpiece with the most impressive gimmick reproduction we've ever seen in the line. ^^

First off, despite its small size, the parts breakdown is surprisingly detailed — thanks to that, even a straight build captures the intricate color combination really well, and the head lens section and the right red shoulder have even been given separate paint applications. On top of that, even though it's an SD-style kit with a 3-head-tall concept, the proportions are actually quite good, making for a very satisfying finished build.

The highlight of the D-Style Votoms is all the gimmick reproduction, and it holds its own against Bandai's 1/20 Votoms kit — pretty much every design feature is faithfully recreated. The head section features lens rotation/lateral movement and cover opening, plus full cockpit opening. The forearm extends, and even the tiny Tankpick fixing pin on the foot is articulated. Most impressively, the two-stage extending legs combined with various supporting gimmicks mean the Down Form is reproduced almost perfectly (!!!) — which is genuinely moving. It can be a little tricky to get the angles just right, but the sheer amount of gimmicks packed into this palm-sized kit is nothing short of amazing.

The cockpit figure is also a cute little thing — the pilot Chirico's head can be assembled either bare-faced or with a helmet on, your choice. The right forearm is similarly a pick-one-of-two deal between the standard and armored versions, though since the red shoulder joint is so tight to disassemble, swapping between them after the fact looks like it'd be pretty tough.

The ¥3,500 price tag felt a bit steep for the size at first, but once you actually build it, it starts to make sense. This is hands-down the most gimmick-packed and impressive D-Style kit released so far — an absolute must for Votoms fans, and honestly worth recommending to any mecha enthusiast who wants a fun build. :-)
