Kit Review
Straight build
Straight build
Optimus Prime (a.k.a. Convoy) from Transformers has joined the D-Style lineup. Rather than the over-the-top design from Michael Bay's movies, this one comes in a cute and charming style faithful to the original animation.
The color separation is pretty solid, giving you a fairly colorful result even from a straight build alone. Interestingly for a Kotobukiya kit, the Transformers insignia is applied via stickers rather than seals or decals. Feature-wise, turning the ear parts lets you slightly open and close the face mask, and opening the chest window reveals a Matrix made of clear parts inside. For weapons, you get a laser rifle and an energy axe.
As a bonus, a small-scale trailer that Optimus transforms into is also included. It's put together simply with just 2 parts, but it still comes out looking pretty fun.
As you'd expect from an SD-style kit, the articulation isn't exactly impressive, but there is a gimmick to drop the hip joint down to gain some range of motion, so you can at least get about 90 degrees of bend in the limbs. That's enough to pull off a few decent poses, though honestly this kit's appeal is less about posing and more about just how darn cute it looks.
It feels like another fun series is kicking off in the D-Style lineup, which keeps bringing in all kinds of mechs. The snap-fit goes together nicely without any glue, so if you're a Transformers fan, this is a great kit that's easy and fun to build. :-)
