Kotobukiya D Style

Megatron

Kit Review

Straight build

Following Optimus Prime, Megatron has now been released in D-Style as well. Just like its predecessor, it comes in a simple anime-style design. What makes it stand out is that, fitting for a villain, you can swap between a normal face, a sneering face, and a screaming face to recreate a variety of expressions.

The basic build and concept are the same as Optimus Prime, including the feature where you slide the hip joint downward to extend the range of motion — that's been carried over here too. On top of that, to better capture Megatron's metallic look, the silver exterior parts are coated in a matte silver plating, so even in a straight build you get a really premium feel to the colors. ^^

For weapons, you get a Fusion Cannon that mounts on the forearm, a rifle-shaped Gun Mode, and a flail called the Energy Mace. Due to the shape of the Gun Mode, if you want to hold it in the hand, you'll need to swap out the rear stock for a handle parts piece.

All in all, this is a kit that does a great job of capturing anime Megatron in an adorable way, and it even comes with a matte silver plating coating — so it's honestly surprising that it's only 200 yen more than Optimus Prime. Bandai has been getting some flak lately for jacking up prices too much on plated kits, but it seems like Kotobukiya doesn't feel the coating paint costs are all that significant ;; Maybe it's because the base kit price is already on the higher side to begin with — but either way, displayed alongside Optimus Prime, they make a great pair of rival kits that just belong together. :-)
