Kotobukiya Frame Arms

Ryurai-Kai

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is an original Frame Arms unit called the Ryurai-Kai, continuing the tank-type mecha lineage that started with the Ryurai-Kai and Tenrai before it. The concept behind the kit's composition is the same as the Tenrai — armor is simply added on top of the Ryurai-Kai kit — so as shown in the review above, it can also be built as the Ryurai-Kai.

It has a bulkier, more voluminous look compared to the Ryurai-Kai and Tenrai, with two massive cannons mounted on the backpack much like a Guncannon, and large shield-type armor fitted on the arms. It also has articulated support stands on the legs for cannon-firing mode, which lets you pull off some pretty convincing firing poses.

Since the basic kit composition is the same as the Ryurai-Kai, the relatively solid joint strength and sharp molding are at the same level as well — overall quality sits at upper-mid grade.

For an original kit without much of a background story, the tank-type design seems to have resonated well enough in the market to keep producing tank-type variations. It's still one of the most consistently well-made lineups among Kotobukiya kits, so if you're into that heavy, chunky design aesthetic, I'd say it's definitely worth building at least once. :-)
