NSG-25γ Strauss

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is the NSG-25γ Strauss, released alongside the Kobold as the 10th entry in the Frame Arms line. The design itself is quite unique — long legs, short arms, and an alien-like elongated head (writing it out like that, it does sound pretty bizarre..).

Setting aside the unique design for a moment... despite having an awkward center of gravity overall, the joint strength is extremely weak. T_T This kit is so poorly built it's hard to even stand it up straight, let alone strike an action pose. The ankle joints can't support any weight at all, so you have to barely prop it forward, and the hip joints can't hold up against the forward-leaning center of gravity from the head and torso, causing the whole thing to nosedive straight to the ground.. It's genuinely one of the weakest-jointed kits I've seen in a long time.

Given the joint situation, it's hard to give the NSG-25γ Strauss a good score as a standalone kit... but the real value of this kit lies in the Weisheit, formed by combining it with the Kobold. You disassemble and reconstruct the body, head, legs, and other parts, then combine them with the Kobold's parts to create the robot form known as the Weisheit — and it's got a really slick, super robot-style design that looks genuinely awesome. On top of that, the Strauss's weird proportions and layout get sorted out nicely once it becomes the Weisheit, so the joint issues disappear too. It can stand upright without much trouble and you can pull off action poses, which is a relief.

In the end, I'm not really sure what the NSG-25γ Strauss is worth as a kit on its own — it really feels more like it exists to combine with the Kobold. That said, while the combining mech Weisheit does look great, you'd need to buy both the Kobold and the Strauss, which comes out to a whopping ¥6000, so it's hard to call it great value for money. ^^;

It's a kit with a lot of ups and downs, but either way, the end result of Kobold + NSG-25γ Strauss = Weisheit is a success. The price might be a sticking point, but if you like the design, it's definitely worth going for. Just note — of the two kits, I can recommend building the Kobold on its own, but I wouldn't recommend the Strauss by itself. If you're going to build this kit, I strongly suggest getting the Kobold together with it and going all the way to the Weisheit. ^^
