Kotobukiya Frame Arms

32-5C Zenrai with Assault Unit

Kit Review

Straight build

The 19th Frame Arms kit is the Zenrai with Assault Unit (32-5C), a variation of the Type 32 Model 5 Zenrai. It takes the existing Zenrai and changes the molded color to gray, then adds two large bazookas, four Boosters, and a cape.

Just like the Zenrai, leftover parts are included so you can also convert it into the Type 32 Model 1 Goraiou, and there are plenty of parts in the box to build the base Type 32 Model 5 Zenrai as well.

The added Boosters mount on the rear legs and back, and two of them can also be repositioned onto the shoulders. The two bazookas can be combined into an even more imposing configuration. Load it up with all those Boosters, the double bazooka, and that cool cape, and you end up with a pretty stylish unit.

The Architect frame is getting a bit long in the tooth, so while articulation is decent enough, joint strength is a real issue. On this kit too, the limbs pop off easily and the joints feel loose when trying to hold a pose — still a frustrating weak point. The Architect really struggles to stay put when it's loaded down with a lot of accessories..

The joints are a bit on the weak side, but they hold together well enough that even a simple pose looks pretty sharp — that's one of the Assault Unit's strong points. Above all, the non-woven cape is easy to reshape into all sorts of billowing configurations, making it a genuinely stylish and useful accessory.

Anyway, the finished look is solid enough that if you've been curious about Frame Arms, I'd actually recommend starting with this kit over some of the others. Just keep in mind that the snap-fit connections aren't great, so you'll need to glue more spots than you'd expect to get it to hold together properly.. :-)
