Cutlass

Kit Review

Straight build

The Cutlass, a variation unit of the Baselard, has been released as the 27th Frame Arms kit. The Cutlass is a slashing sword used by sailors in the 18th and 19th centuries, and it seems the name comes from the clear parts blades attached to the shield and toes.

Aside from the newly added head, knees, and feet, the main body is identical to the Baselard — but the molded colors give it a much heavier, weightier feel that makes it look quite different visually. The combination of gray, white, and red works together cleanly, so the straight build actually looks a bit better than the Baselard's.

The armaments are limited to just a rifle and the Beryl Dagger, so pulling off a wide variety of poses is a bit tough — but the articulation is solid enough that you can still get some decent action shots. The flying kick pose using the Beryl Dagger-equipped feet is especially a look you don't often see from other kits.

Aside from the heavier color scheme and slightly tweaked design elements, there's not a whole lot new here as a variation kit — but thanks to the more imposing visuals compared to the Baselard and the clean color combination, it does feel like a slightly higher quality build overall. If you like the design, it's a solid Frame Arms kit that's easy to recommend. :-)
