Kagutsuchi-Otsu [Sniper]

Kit Review

Straight build

Following the Kagutsuchi-Ko — which was the beefiest kit in the Frame Arms lineup — we now have the Kagutsuchi-Otsu <Sniper>. (In Japanese it's read as Kazuguchi Otsu.)

The basic body structure is the same, but the head, shoulders, chest, and leg armor have been redesigned, and a massive sniper rifle is included. Unlike the Kagutsuchi-Ko with its desert color scheme, this one goes with deep blue and white armor, giving it a completely different overall look. The newly added large rifle in particular just oozes impact with its sheer size and style.

The large rifle can have its barrel length extended or retracted, and the bipod can be folded out or in — and with all those parts combined together, it pulls off an impressive sense of depth and a really slick look. Personally, I'd say this ranks at the absolute TOP among all the mecha weapons I've seen so far in terms of both functionality and style. It's honestly a kit worth buying for this rifle alone.

The main body is essentially the Kagutsuchi-Ko with some armor swapped out, and just like the Kagutsuchi-Ko, the polycaps in the Frame Architect inner frame are too weak for such a chunky body — so the joint strength is pretty rough. T_T The hold just isn't up to the task of supporting that hefty frame, though if you balance the center of gravity carefully and get the joints sitting just right, you can get it to hold a pose to some degree.

So while the focus on looks does come at the cost of articulation and joint strength — making posing a bit of a struggle in various ways — the visuals are so unique that if you get it into a good pose with that big rifle, the display effect is fantastic.

All in all, as part of an original mecha design lineup that wins purely on the sheer impact of its design, this kit definitely earns high marks. Sure, it has plenty of flaws, but that sharp visual alone has a freshness to it that's hard to find in Gunpla. :-)
