CVX-83 Izumo

Kit Review

Straight build

CVX-83 Izumo has been released as the 51st kit in the Frame Arms lineup. It's a sibling kit to Frame Arms #42 Kongou — the basic skeleton and transformation method are the same, but some of the armor and weapons have been changed, making it a variation kit. On the main body, the head, chest, shoulders, and knee designs have been slightly revised, and the weapons have been swapped out for two large shields and a rifle.

The body design has been partially changed, but since the molded colors and color scheme are the same, it doesn't feel all that different overall. The two newly added large shields are probably the biggest distinguishing feature. That said, the shields are so large that the Architect skeleton — which was already a bit shaky to begin with — just doesn't have enough joint strength to handle them. The lower body holds together reasonably well, but it's hard to raise the arms with the shields attached, which limits your posing options.

Like the Kongou, the Izumo can also transform into a cruise mode — but while the Kongou's lower body transforms into a warship, the Izumo transforms into an aircraft carrier. Using the two large shields as the front and rear decks makes it considerably bigger than the Kongou, though the transformation process itself is pretty much the same. The shields also let you freely position all four drones, and four clear joint parts are included so you can recreate a launch sequence using separate stands.

So this kit actually shows off a more impressive transformation visual than the original Kongou — seriously, the lower body turning into an aircraft carrier is a genuinely clever gimmick. Aside from the shoulder joints feeling a bit weak under the weight of all that large, heavy weaponry, the rest of the joints hold up pretty well. Either way, if you're drawn to the Izumo's unique style and transformation, it's probably worth the investment. (Though the ¥9,000 price tag is a bit of a trap... OTL)
