Kotobukiya Frame Arms Girl

Magatsuki

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is the Magatsuki released as part of the Frame Arms Girl series. Like many of its predecessors, it's a girlpla wearing the armor from Frame Arms Magatsuki. The overall format is pretty much the same as before — it feels more like a design change than anything else.

The weapons are the same as the Frame Arms Magatsuki, with four blades included (two Tenkai, two Satsuga) that can be stored on the back. A new gimmick lets you add separate joint parts to mount the Tenkai on the foot soles. Following Frame Arms tradition, you can also remove the armor to get the base body form — here it's called Kunoichi (female ninja) Mode, and you can add optional waist parts to taste. These optional parts can also be used in Armed Mode after removing the scabbards. In Kunoichi Mode, if you swap in the legs from Frame Arms Girl Innocentia and add joint parts to the thighs, you can set it up to carry the scabbards along the sides of the legs.

The body features a new waist extension gimmick, where you pull the torso upward to extend the waist joint and increase the range of motion. The problem is that the waist ball joint is weaker than the extension gimmick itself — if you grab the upper body and pull to extend the waist, there's a good chance the entire upper body will just pop off instead. The hip joints also have the same individual downward extension gimmick as previous kits to increase range of motion, but again, if you pull on the legs to extend them, the torso and legs tend to separate first. So there are gimmicks here meant to help with articulation, but the balance between mobility and holding strength is off, making them awkward to actually use in practice. On the bright side, the joint strength itself is solid, so once you get a pose set, it holds well — though with so much stuff hanging off the kit, it does take a fair bit of fiddling to get everything posed.

The new articulation gimmicks are a bit of a mixed bag and tricky to use, but overall the kit feels solid and the exterior design is very well executed, giving it a high-quality feel. In particular, you can really sense the joint strength improving with each release — I really appreciate how firmly it holds both standing poses and action poses. If the design style is your thing, this is a great girlpla that's well worth recommending. :-)
