Godzilla (1989)

Kit Review

Straight build

The Godzilla from the 1989 film Godzilla vs. Biollante has been released as a Kotobukiya plastic model kit in 2025. It's a fixed-pose statue kit with no articulation at all — something you don't often see from Kotobukiya. The overall sculpt and proportions have turned out exceptionally well.

First off, the parts count is low and assembly goes together smoothly, so anyone can build it quickly and easily. The building process is pleasant and the end result looks great, giving you a really satisfying build experience. Godzilla's signature orange-peel-like (...) skin texture is reproduced with impressive precision, and on top of that, the seam lines are handled so cleanly that they're barely visible. The kit is also designed so you can easily disassemble the head, torso, arms, legs, and tail for storage. From assembly to disassembly, the snap-fit feel is on par with Bandai's level of quality.

The head can be swapped between an open-mouth and a closed-mouth version, and the spare head can be displayed on the included dedicated stand. Other than that, there are no accessories and no articulation at all, so for this review, just take a good look at the overall appearance through the photos.

All in all, this is a plastic model kit that easily rivals the quality of most figures. In particular, the snap-fit connection between parts feels like the most finely tuned of any Kotobukiya kit I've seen. Either way, the visuals are great for how low the build difficulty is, making this a fun kit I'd recommend to any plastic model fan. :-)
