Kotobukiya Gurrenlagann

Kingkittan

Kit Review

Straight build

Following the non-scale Gurren Lagann, Kingkittan has been released as a plain model. In Gurren Lagann, it's one of the mechs seized from the beastmen by the surface-dwelling humans, inspired by Kamina's exploits. Specifically, this is the mech piloted by a character named Kittan — and that mech is Kingkittan.

As you can see, this thing has a seriously unique look to it. On top of the spiky design, the spear and shield weapons are unusual too, and the overall appearance is just plain bizarre;; Like most of the beastmen mechs in Gurren Lagann, the body is essentially the face — and the color combination is so pastel and washed-out compared to other kits that this one ends up giving off quite a soft, hazy vibe.

The molded colors — bright yellow, pink, and red — are noticeably more pastel and washed-out compared to previous Kotobukiya kits made in China. Unlike the SRW kits, which had a somewhat rough and iffy color feel, the colors here are molded beautifully, right up there with Bandai quality.

The mid-joint on the arms and legs is still fixed, so there aren't really any standout poses you can pull off — but thanks to that bizarre look, just standing it there gives it a certain presence. As is typical of Kotobukiya plain models, it goes together easily with a very minimal parts count, and the build feel and hands-on satisfaction are both great. The molded colors in particular are excellent, making this a very satisfying kit overall.

Anyway, one way or another... this is a genuinely unique kit that I'd recommend without hesitation to anyone looking to build something a little different. :-)
