Kotobukiya Gurrenlagann

Enki

Kit Review

Straight build

Enki, the beastman mech, has been added to the Plain Model lineup that previously only featured mechs from the Gunmen side. It's the iconic officer-class(?) beastman mech that faces off against Gurren Lagann early in the series, and it sports a truly unique design.

Unlike the other mechs, the body lines and overall design are very close to a human form, so once assembled it gives off the feel of a human-shaped statue. The proportions of the arms and legs are also set at angles that reinforce that standing-statue look. As a result, the arms are pretty much fixed in place, though you can get shoulder rotation if you pull them out. However, due to the design, the legs are almost completely blocked by the skirt and can barely move at all..; The articulation is roughly on par with a Bandai kit from 20 years ago...

This kit has an option that no other kit in the lineup has — both head variants that appear in the show are included. One is the helmet-type head, and the other has a large sword stuck in it. The backstory is that Enki originally wore the helmet until Gurren Lagann swiped it.

The molded color is a bright, somewhat garish blue that could easily look cheap, but thankfully it doesn't come across too badly. For a Chinese-molded product, the quality is actually quite decent. The clean molding quality compared to older Kotobukiya kits seems to be a common trait across the Gurren Lagann Plain Model series.

As a fairly prominent villain mech in the Gurren Lagann anime, the quality is reasonably solid. Just be careful with the sword on the side — it doesn't hold very well and tends to fall off.. ^^;
