Kotobukiya Hexa Gear

Governor Armor Type: PAWN A1

Kit Review

Straight build

In August 2017, Kotobukiya launched a brand-new original lineup called Hexa Gear. It's basically a series featuring 1/24 scale combat soldier characters along with a variety of mechs, and as the name suggests, it's built around hexagonal nut-shaped connection points and polycaps as its base.

This kit is one of the first four releases — it's a human combat soldier character kit with the rather long name "Governor Armor Type: PAWN A1". Being 1/24 scale, it's a cute little thing at only about 7.4 cm tall, though at 1,600 yen the value for money isn't exactly great.

It's small, but the articulation is fantastic — you can pull off all kinds of poses on par with a ball-jointed doll. Joint strength is somewhere in the middle, neither terrible nor rock-solid, but since the kit is so small it doesn't really cause any issues holding poses. That said, with so many moving parts it does take a bit of time to get everything dialed in just right, and the weapons mounted on the back don't lock in very securely and tend to fall off.

Pre-painted parts are included right out of the box, so even a straight build looks great. Weapons-wise, you get a rifle and a sword. You can also plug a hexagonal nut-shaped part into the hex socket on the back and mount it on a Kotobukiya-specific stand — it's a small kit, but it packs in a solid amount of functionality.

It's a small kit, but the top-tier articulation makes posing a real treat, and since you can seat the figure inside same-scale mechs, it's pretty much a must-have for anyone getting into Hexa Gear. :-)
