Kotobukiya Hexa Gear

Blockbuster

Kit Review

Straight build

The Blockbuster was released alongside the Motor Punisher as part of the Hexa Gear mechanic lineup. Much like the Motor Punisher with its earwig concept, the design seems to be insect-inspired — it kind of looks like a dragonfly, or maybe just another type of earwig. Either way, it definitely gives off a bug vibe.

The legs are made up of four multi-jointed legs, same as the Motor Punisher, but the main body is pretty heavy, and the joint strength on the legs feels lacking as a result. There's an issue where the legs keep sagging downward, struggling to hold the body up — it really would've been nice if they'd paid a bit more attention to the leg joints.

The articulation range of the legs is similar to the Motor Punisher, and on top of that the front gun barrel and Assault Blade are also poseable. The canopy on the cockpit section opening wide front and back is a particularly cool touch. You can of course seat Governor figures in there too, and given the nature of the kit, the Governor Light Armor Type: Rose seems like a natural fit.

Transforming into vehicle mode is even simpler here — you just fold the legs inward and lift it up, and that's all there is to it. The difference from normal mode is so minimal you might wonder if it even counts as a transformation, but since this kit wins on style anyway, I guess that's just how it is.

Anyway, it's definitely a unique mecha model kit in its own right, but it feels like it has less of an impact compared to the Bolt Rex or Rayblade Impulse, which transformed into some seriously cool bikes. The weak leg joint strength is a letdown too, but I'd say this kit is still worthwhile for the variety of interesting ideas it experiments with. :-)
