Kotobukiya Hexa Gear

Abyss Crawler

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is the Abyss Crawler from the Hexa Gear series. It has a style reminiscent of the Tachikoma from Ghost in the Shell — a multi-legged mech with six legs and two arms.

First off, thanks to the excellent color separation, a pretty colorful look is achieved even with just a straight build, and a cockpit is included that can seat a separately sold humanoid Governor. As for option parts, you get wire parts for the head anchor and effect parts that attach to the large claw arm known as the Hiding Scissors. The Hiding Scissors can be set up for either the left or right arm by swapping out the armor panels.

The Hiding Scissors has quite a wide range of motion, and each of the six legs moves individually in 3 segments, with the body connection points extendable like sub-arms. That said, just like with previous releases, the joint strength on the sub-arms that connect to the body feels a bit shaky — after repeated posing, there's a real risk of them giving out and the body collapsing downward. Having six legs does help distribute the weight enough to hold up, but the multi-legged mechs in the Hexa Gear line generally seem to need some improvement in joint strength.

There's also a simple transformation into a second form, though it really just shifts the body into a lower, more crouched stance, so it doesn't feel dramatically different. That said, as an original design mech, it's a unique and stylish kit, and if you reinforce the leg joint strength just a little, it's a pretty well-executed mecha plastic model overall. :-)
