Definition Armor "Blazeboar"

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is the Definition Armor "Blazeboar" released as part of the Hexa Gear series. It's a similar concept to the previously released Hexa Gear Aerial Fighter Woodpecker — an augmented armor-type unit that a Governor pilots by riding inside. The overall size is on the small side, but it's at least bigger and more solid-looking than the Woodpecker.

The included pilot is a Governor Warmage Hector with a dedicated head unit, and since it's meant for riding, all weapons and accessories have been left out. The Blazeboar itself has a compact but sturdy-looking style, and the articulation on its own is decent enough — but once you seat the Governor, the leg range of motion becomes very limited. Moving the legs too far causes the Governor's legs to pop out, which doesn't look great.

The Governor connects to the Blazeboar via a separate joint part on the back, and the connection itself is solid. The pilot is also meant to hold control units in both hands, but since these units aren't fixed to the body, you basically just have to position them loosely at the sides. The weapons include a shield called the Wall Krieg and a rocket launcher called the Binary Howl, with a movable claw on the front of the Wall Krieg. The Binary Howl can also be split in two and mounted behind each shoulder, and as a bonus, you can swap in commander-type head antenna.

So while the articulation is limited, it's still a pretty stylish kit — though the lower body joint structure feels a bit iffy and tends to come apart during posing. The leg joints aren't loose exactly, but the connection points are simple enough that there's a real risk of them popping out while you're moving things around, so you'll want to be careful. Outside of the lower body issues, the joints are generally solid throughout, and thankfully the large weapons stay securely attached to the arms.

Anyway, the awkward leg articulation and unreliable joint retention are a bit of a letdown, but it's still a pretty stylish mech overall. I'd say it's worth recommending for the look alone — but the biggest hurdle is probably the ¥5,200 price tag for something that fits in the palm of your hand. :-)
