Kotobukiya Hexa Gear

L.O.Z. [Lord of Zoatex]

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is the L.O.Z. [Lord of Zoatex], released as part of the Hexa Gear series. It shares a similar format with the previously released Hexa Gear Lord Impulse— both are four-legged beast-type mecha — but aside from the long tail and general silhouette, this is a completely different design and a 100% all-new sculpt.

Being a brand-new sculpt, it does bring a fresh design to the table, though with so many similar quadruped kits already out there, it doesn't feel dramatically distinct at first glance. That said, once you start fiddling with the various gimmicks, you can feel some genuinely unique new mechanisms and exterior details in your hands. Notably, the joint strength has gotten noticeably tighter compared to previous kits, which makes pose stability significantly better. The range of motion across the joints throughout the body is solid too, and since there's no transformation gimmick unlike the Lord Impulse, the articulation feels much more natural overall.

For special gimmicks, you get the Imperial Roar mouth-opening gimmick, a top-mounted laser cannon deployment gimmick, and the ability to attach large clear parts on both sides as shields. Two head sizes are included with the same design, so you can swap them out based on your preference. It also has the same structure as previous kits that lets you mount a Governor, and it's specifically recommended to use the separately sold Governor EX Armor Type
Monoceros
for that purpose.

So here we have a quadruped mecha that feels both familiar and fresh at the same time — and true to Kotobukiya form, it's packed with a huge number of parts for its size. (Seriously, where do all these parts even go??) That means assembly takes quite a while, and the price tag is up in the ¥8,000 range, which is on the pricier side. The fit throughout is also pretty stiff, so your hands will be feeling it by the time you're done — but since that stiffness translates directly into solid joint stability, it's easy to forgive.

All in all, this is the kit with the best joint stability among Kotobukiya's quadruped mecha lineup, and if the style suits your taste, it's definitely worth recommending. :-)
