Kotobukiya Hexa Gear

Governor Engineer Set Type A

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is the Governor Engineer Set Type A, released as part of Kotobukiya's Hexa Gear series. It includes two engineers, one droid, and a set of tool accessories. There are four tools in total, along with two toolboxes — one open and one closed.

The engineers are similar in size and construction to existing Governor kits, just with different designs. They have the same solid articulation and joint strength you'd expect, and I appreciate that the shoulders are designed to stay put and not pop off easily. The little droid has ball joints at the arms, legs, waist, and eyes, so it moves around quite freely — and surprisingly, you can get a good variety of expressive poses out of it. The four tools can be stored in the open toolbox, or mounted in the engineer's back pocket or at the waist.

Using all these different combinations of accessories, you can freely recreate all kinds of scenes like the ones shown above. The overall contents and kit quality are perfectly fine, but the issue is — as always — the price... All of this fits inside a small box about the size of a slightly oversized SD Gundam kit, and it'll run you a whopping ¥5,400. Everything combined barely fills the palm of your hand, so this has to be one of the worst value-for-money kits in the entire Kotobukiya lineup.

In the end, it's pricey for what you get — but it's not so expensive that you'd call it a luxury item outright. If the style is right up your alley or you've been looking for a poseable little mechanic figure, it's a good-quality kit that's worth the investment. :-)
