Kotobukiya Hoihoi-san

Combat-san

Kit Review

Straight build

Following Hoihoi-san, Combat-san — who appears as her rival in the story — has now been released.
Combat-san, who does battle with Hoihoi-san, has a slightly more mature (?) concept,
and the kit itself is larger and more slender than Hoihoi-san.

First off, the overall proportions are very well done, as you'd expect from Kotobukiya,
and the articulation gimmicks and relatively solid joint strength are
executed just as well as Hoihoi-san. The articulation isn't exceptional,
but given the nature of the kit, even a little posing goes a long way in terms of looking cool —
and being more slender than Hoihoi-san seems to give the poses a very different feel.

The color separation is handled well enough, and the molded colors look great,
so the visual satisfaction after a straight build is quite high. One particularly fun touch is
that you cut out the lace underskirt section from the manual with scissors and layer it under the skirt —
and it actually looks surprisingly convincing.

The feet, which are ball-jointed at both the front and back, do allow for a wider variety of poses
compared to Hoihoi-san, but the front foot section tends to pop off easily, which is a bit of a letdown.
Also, unlike Hoihoi-san, Combat-san's straight hair has no articulation,
so there's less you can do expressively with it. On top of that, the overall kit contents
are more modest than Hoihoi-san's — with only 2 weapons, the box can feel a little light when you open it.
That said, the two kits are so different in character that it's probably not fair to compare them
purely on quantity.

Hoihoi-san, which is pioneering the unique genre of cute-girl robot plastic models,
can be considered quite a success. Bandai is also building out the action figure model genre
with their Songoku series, but the vibe is completely different.
For guys especially, the cute and pretty Hoihoi-san side just seems more fun.
And female modelers are probably more likely to gravitate toward this kind of adorable style kit too. :-)

Compared to Hoihoi-san, Combat-san has the appeal of being larger and more slender,
making her a genuinely attractive cute-girl figure model kit.
She ranks among the higher-quality offerings in the Kotobukiya lineup,
so if the style appeals to you, this is definitely a fun build with no worries about quality.
That said, ¥3000 does feel a little pricey relative to the amount of content included. :-)
