Ikaruga Black

Kit Review

Straight build

The second release of the Ikaruga Black mecha from the game — this time in a Black version. As the title suggests, the structure is 100% identical to the original, and it's a straightforward color variant where the white molded color has simply been swapped out for black.

That said, they must have felt a little guilty about just changing the molded color, because they've thrown in 3 new stand joint parts that weren't in the original kit, letting you build the "Sansashinkouki no Tamashii" by combining both stands. (Honestly, I've never played the game myself, so I'm not entirely sure what it is ;) Of course, you'll need the original white Ikaruga kit as well to pull this off.

Since it's really just a color change, there isn't a whole lot to say — but unlike the white version, the black does have its own kind of weighty, brooding appeal. That said, this kit has more of a military model feel than your typical mecha kit: there are lots of tiny parts, you'll need to do quite a bit of gluing, and it's on the fragile side so you have to handle it carefully. Then again, that also gives it a satisfying sense of precision and intricacy.

Either way, this is a pretty niche item — but if you've got fond memories of the Ikaruga game or you're into unique flying-type mecha, it's definitely worth a look. :-)
