Kit Review
Straight build
Trying out all four defense units on the straight spear.
Since the defense units are clear, they don't really stand out much. T_T

This kit is Evangelion 13 from the Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time theatrical film. The color scheme and basic silhouette are similar to Unit-01, but it's a grotesque design featuring a dual entry system, four eyes, and four arms. Compared to the existing Unit-01 and Unit-02, this is a completely new Evangelion kit with all-new molds.
First off, like most Kotobukiya kits that excel at figure-style sculpting, the overall form looks really impressive. The color separation is well done too, so even a straight build gives you a great-looking result — the head area in particular has a lot of pre-painted parts applied. The distinctive four-arm configuration is achieved by swapping out the chest, and for weapons you get the two spears that appear in the film, which can also be combined by joining the two elongated handle sections together. On top of that, the accessories include a defense unit storage block that mounts on the shoulders, four clear defense units, and a display stand.
The articulation isn't quite as flexible as you might hope for an Eva, but it can pull off most of the signature poses. The biggest issue with this kit, though, is some questionable joint strength and part retention. The waist tends to pop out during posing, and the extra arms on the chest and the wrists keep coming loose, which makes posing a real hassle. On top of that, the feet are small and the ankle joints are weak, so just getting it to stand upright on its own is a challenge — a separately sold display stand is pretty much a necessity with this one. Unit-01 and Unit-02 had decent joint strength and ground contact, so this one feels noticeably shakier by comparison.
There are also some parts that are just annoying to assemble — fitting the ball joint polycap that connects the hip to the thigh takes a serious amount of force (literally). There are also a few parts that don't hold together well and keep falling off, so there are quite a few frustrating points compared to other kits.
That said, the sculpt and accessories are solid enough that striking an aerial pose on a display stand really does capture the feel of the source material pretty well. For the parts that keep popping off, a bit of glue will take care of most of your worries. It's a shame the overall quality feels like a step down from Unit-01, but I think the real value here is simply being able to build a nicely sculpted Evangelion 13. :-)
