Kit Review
Straight build
The entry plug open gimmick can be recreated via parts swapping.
In some ways it's actually better than Unit-01, which had a motorized version that was too loose to stay in place.

This kit is the Evangelion Production Model-08 Gamma from Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time. It's a brand-new Kotobukiya Evangelion release after quite a while, and unlike the previously released Unit-01 / TV version / Unit-13, this one is built on a completely new mold from the ground up. As a result, it's an upgrade across the board — color separation, visuals, articulation, and joint strength.
Since Bandai had already released the RG Unit-08 Alpha (Wille Custom), Kotobukiya's answer seems to be this Gamma version with its redesigned arms. Compared to Bandai's pink, the colors here are noticeably deeper and richer, and the Gamma's distinctive mechanized arms are well-realized with excellent sculpting and color separation.
The overall parts layout and structure are similar to Kotobukiya's existing Unit-01, and the articulation is on par with it too — though the joints feel a bit sturdier this time around. That said, because they implemented a poseable cylinder behind the elbow, the elbow bend feels a little restricted.
As a special gimmick, the entry plug open feature at the back of the neck is done via parts swapping rather than the motorized approach used on Unit-01. It seems like the motorized entry plug sync gimmick on Unit-01 was too loose, so they went with a swap-out method for a more solid result instead. On top of that, the wrist joints let you choose between poseable and fixed joint parts, which is a thoughtful touch that makes it easier to get the right wrist angle when holding the large weapons.
The kit comes with Large Weapon 1 and 2, both impressively sized with great color separation and detail. Large Weapon 1 in particular is big and hefty, and it connects to the hand securely, so it holds poses really well. There's also a joint part included for fixing the weapon to a separately sold stand, but honestly you don't really need that extra support to pull off a wide variety of poses.
All in all, this is a fantastic upgrade of a kit — great articulation, solid joint strength, and stylish weapons all come together nicely. Purely as an action figure, I actually like it more than Bandai's RG Eva Unit-08. Even if you were burned by Kotobukiya's Eva kits back in the day, I can wholeheartedly recommend this Unit-08. :-)
