Kotobukiya's new girlpla lineup, the Armor Girls series, kicks off with its first release: LBCS: Achilles Mikazuki Karina, based on Cardboard Senki. As the lineup name suggests, it looks like they're planning to release armored girl characters — and it does feel quite different from the existing Frame Arms Girl or Megami Device lines.
First off, it stands out in terms of overall sculpt, color separation, and accessories — most notably, it includes a wire-reinforced fabric cape that you'd normally only expect to find with figures. The triangular fabric cape has a wire running along the inside of its outer edge, letting you bend and pose it however you like. You can really shape and hold it in any position you want, and thanks to this high-quality cape, the dynamic feel of your poses goes up by 200%.
Beyond that, the overall proportions and color separation are excellent, and the articulation is impressive too. The waist flexes in all directions and the arm and leg articulation make posing fun and easy. The front and rear skirt panels open outward, so the hip joint's range of motion isn't restricted at all. The feet are small, yet they somehow have surprisingly good ground contact — probably because the ankle joints are flexible while still being sturdy, so you can pull off plenty of varied standing poses without even needing the included stand. The six soft-material hands grip weapons securely with no issues, and the overall joint strength is solid, so poses hold well once set.
A few things I wish were better: the ponytail hair, which is supposed to have an orange-to-yellow gradient per the design, is just provided as two separate pieces in each color. It would've been absolutely perfect if they'd included a gradient paint finish. Also, the forearm armor doesn't lock in place well due to the structure, and it tends to spin around randomly — I ended up gluing the top part down on mine. On top of that, the neck tends to pop out easily during posing, and while the waist joint is flexible, it feels a bit loose comparatively.
Personally, this is my favorite Kotobukiya girlpla released so far — it shows a whole new level of quality in terms of visuals, articulation, joint strength, accessories, and more. The sculpt may still be a matter of taste, but quality-wise this is a very satisfying kit. The ¥6,800 price tag is a bit of a hurdle, but if you're into girlplas, this is one I'd highly recommend. :-)
