Kotobukiya has kicked off yet another new lineup. (How many irons do they have in the fire?..) Not long ago they turned the classic game character Rockman series into injection-molded kits, and now they've released the KBT10-M Gun Knows from Medabots. It's a game with a lot less name recognition compared to Rockman.. so honestly, I'm a little impressed by the nerve it takes to put this into production;;
Medabots originally came out as a Game Boy game, and it did gain a fair bit of popularity through ports to other platforms as well as manga and anime adaptations.. but I wouldn't say it's particularly well-known. (It was also released as a collected volume by Haksan Publishing.) My guess is that the plastic model release was timed to commemorate the launch of Medabots DS for the Nintendo DS. Or maybe not..
Honestly, my first reaction was "oh come on, do they really need to release something like this.." The design is unusual, but it's not exactly the kind of thing that wins you over right away, and it wasn't a game I was into to begin with. But once I actually built it, it turned out to be surprisingly good!
For starters, I was surprised by how much bigger it is than expected (Kotobukiya kits always feel small for the price..) — the primary color separation is neatly done with a lot of detail, and the range of motion and articulation are better than you'd think, allowing for a good variety of poses. The upper thigh joints do have a tendency to come apart a little too easily, but overall joint strength feels solid. The neck and waist in particular, built with double ball joints, are extremely flexible.
The KBT10-M Gun Knows comes with a variety of accessories — clear effect parts for the Gun Gatling and Gun Magnum, plus a missile-firing gimmick for the Gun Magnum. It's been a long time since I've seen a missile-firing gimmick on a mecha plastic model.. whether it's the strong spring or just good engineering, it flies surprisingly far. I found myself firing it over and over just because it was so fun. It could come across as a bit toy-like, but the design and functionality are clean enough that it fits the kit perfectly.
And uniquely, they've included a cardboard sheet printed with in-game dialogue in speech bubble form.. you cut them out and stand them up on the included stand. It's a bit of a hassle to cut out.. but once you do and display them together, it's actually pretty fun ^^
It's definitely a character that might look a bit unfamiliar and awkward at first// but once you actually build it, there's a surprisingly fresh feel to it and it's genuinely fun to play around with.. If Medabots DS for Nintendo DS becomes a big hit, this could end up selling really well — but either way, if you're drawn to something with a fresh and unique style, this is a solid kit that's well worth enjoying :-)
