Kotobukiya Megami Device

Sugumi Kanagata

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is Sugumi Kanagata, released as part of the Megami Device – Alice Gear Aegis collaboration series. Excluding variations, she's the 5th Alice Gear Aegis game character to get a kit, and she comes in at a pretty steep ¥9,500. The box is appropriately large to match the price, and inside there are a whopping 43 runners packed in.

More than half of those runners are parts that go into the complex Tops Gear and Bottoms Gear. The so-called "Kotobukiya Magic" — where an enormous number of parts go into something that looks deceptively simple once assembled — is alive and well here. (You finish it and think, "wait, where did all those parts go??") Compared to Bandai, the parts breakdown is less efficient, but flip that around and you could also call it a craftsman's dedication to achieving the result through such meticulous part division.

Either way, the sheer part count means it takes quite a while to build, and the finished product definitely has more volume than your typical girlpla. The Tops Gear mounted on the upper back in particular is quite large and heavy, but the clear green joint parts hold it up more solidly than you'd expect. The joint where the upper Tops Gear connects can also be set using a sturdy fixed U-shaped part instead of the articulated one, so you can lock in the angle. The Tops Gear also has a deployment gimmick that opens up in various ways, plus a feature for adding effect parts, so you can recreate the Giga Volte Cannon mode with everything deployed forward.

The weapons are just as generous as the kit's overall volume — you get the Cross Gear shield/sword, Short Gear, and two SP Gears. The Cross Gear sword can be stored inside the shield, and effect parts can be applied to the Short Gear as well. Beyond that, you also get parts for three different facial expressions and for achieving base body mode, just like previous releases. Articulation is a slight weak point though — the fixed skirt structure means you can't raise the thighs very high. That said, the weapons are so large and impressive that the real appeal of this kit comes from deploying them rather than posing the body itself.

So the main selling points here are the striking visuals and sheer volume. I especially want to give it high marks for how much attention was paid to keeping the weapons securely in place — the overall parts and articulation gimmicks feel very solid. It's so big and flashy, yet everything holds together so well; it feels noticeably more stable than previous releases. The one issue is that the articulated cover on the bottom of the Bottoms Gear tends to fall off due to its structure, but since the larger, heavier parts around it hold their positions well, it's something you can probably live with.

For what it's worth, I only recently installed Alice Gear Aegis and started playing it myself — and I think whether or not you play the game will make a big difference in how attached you feel to the characters. Given that it's a girlpla shooting game where the girls fight in space loaded up with weapons, if your favorite character gets a kit release, you'll probably want to build it regardless of the price. Anyway, the ¥9,500 price tag is a bit of a hurdle, but if you're into girlplas, this seems like a fantastic kit well worth taking on at least once. :-)
