A brand-new design has finally joined the Muv-Luv lineup, which had been mostly recycling the Takemikazuchi and Shiranui. Known as the EF-2000 Typhoon, this unit sports a more angular, fighter jet-style mech design compared to previous Muv-Luv units — it's quite a stylish look ^^
Since it's an entirely new design, all the runners use new molds, but the overall construction is pretty much identical to existing Muv-Luv kits — just with differently shaped parts. Maybe that's why, despite being a new design, it somehow feels a little less fresh than you'd expect.
The Typhoon's standout features are the massive company support cannon, plus two attack cannons and two axe-type weapons called Flügelbertes. The backpack mounting gimmick works the same as on previous Muv-Luv units, but with more articulated sub-sections that give it a more flexible feel. There's plenty of accessories as you'd expect from a Muv-Luv kit, though it's a slight step down from the previous releases.
The design is so complex that articulation takes a bit of a hit, but the flashy silhouette means even a simple pose looks great. That said, unfortunately — just like its predecessors — there's so much hanging off this thing that parts tend to fall off during posing T_T In particular, the binder ball joints pop out constantly, and the joint strength isn't tight enough, which makes getting poses to hold a bit of a headache — a proud tradition carried over from the earlier kits ^^;
Still, compared to early releases like the Takemikazuchi, the joint strength has improved a bit, so it holds up better for display in standing mode. It's more of a "don't touch it and it looks fine" situation — getting the angles right while posing is the tricky part.
Either way, this is a kit that wins on style, and there's plenty of fun to be had appreciating the intricate, complex sculpt. If you're a Muv-Luv fan who's gotten a little tired of the Takemikazuchi and Shiranui, building the Typhoon with its fresh new design should be a pretty enjoyable change of pace :-)
