Shiranui Imperial Japanese Army

Kit Review

Straight build

The 11th kit in the Muv-Luv non-scale lineup is the Shiranui Imperial Japanese Army, a color variant of the Shiranui Assault Type. The base body is essentially the same shape with only the molded color changed to a gray tone, plus the missile container weapons added on top. (Which bumped the price up by ¥400.)

Compared to the Shiranui Second released early in the Muv-Luv lineup, the regular Shiranui has some polycap improvements, so the joints are a bit sturdier than those early kits. That said, the improvement isn't quite enough to call them truly solid — there's still a bit of an uneasy feeling, especially around the waist ball joint. On top of that, there's a lot of weapons hanging off this thing, so getting a photo taken is a bit of a hassle since parts keep falling off left and right.

The switch to gray molded colors does make it feel a bit drab, but it also gives off a nice, weighty impression. With the large shield plus the openable missile container included, it ends up looking quite formidable.

Anyway, thanks to the more generous weapons loadout compared to other kits, it comes in a large box with a special feel to the packaging — but the contents themselves are a pretty typical color variant kit without much that's genuinely new. If you're a fan of the Muv-Luv mechs and want the one that feels the most like an actual weapon, this seems like a worthwhile pick. :-)
