Takemikaduchi Ver1.5

Kit Review

Straight build

The 15th kit in the Muv-Luv non-scale lineup is the Takemikaduchi Ver1.5. Not sure if they matched the numbering to "v1.5" because it's the 15th kit (^^;), but the original Takemikaduchi did have quite a few quality issues, to be honest.

The biggest problem with the Takemikaduchi v1.0, as I pointed out in my review at the time, was the joint strength. The proportions and detail were pretty impressive, but the flimsy waist, shoulders, hip joints, ankles, and so on made it an unstable kit that was a total mess in terms of holding strength. So it's no surprise that the upgrade points on this v1.5 are mostly focused on the joints — meaning it looks almost identical to the 1.0 from the outside.

In exchange, all the major joints — waist, hips, knees, ankles, elbows — have been changed to sturdier designs, and as a result it's become a Takemikaduchi that's incomparably more solid than the 1.0. ^^ It's not quite perfect, but at least the joint strength is a massive leap forward compared to the 1.0. One odd thing, though — whether it's because the joints were replaced or something else, the center of gravity feels like it's shifted further back compared to the 1.0. So you need to push the upper body forward a bit more to keep it standing. With the 1.0, even though the joints were flimsy, balancing it wasn't really that much of a problem, so something does feel a bit off here.

Beyond the joint strength, some of the weapons have been partially upgraded as well — the assault cannon's gimmick has been changed, and quite a few parts have been added so it can be configured as a support assault cannon. On top of that, the joint on the back-mounted assault cannon storage unit, which was fixed in the 1.0, has been changed to be articulated in the 1.5.

Anyway, as a v1.5 that accurately identified and addressed the shortcomings of the original release, the joint strength issues that were so frustrating do feel like they've been properly resolved. That said, if they were going to do an upgrade anyway, it would've been nice to have a few more visually distinctive elements as well. They really only touched up the internal mechanics, so just looking at the outside, you'd have no idea which version you're looking at.

There's a part of me that wishes it had come out this well from the start, but I guess you can't have everything right away, right? ^^; The quality difference between the 1.0 and 1.5 is clear, so if you're building a Takemikaduchi for the first time, I'd say go with the Ver1.5 without hesitation. (Just keep in mind the price has gone up by ¥1,000~)
