Kotobukiya Muv-Luv 1/144

Shiranui Second Phase3 No.2 (Takara Yui Ki)

Kit Review

Straight build

As the 13th kit in the sporadic Muv-Luv 1/144 lineup, the Shiranui Second Phase 3 — Takara Yui unit has been released. It's a 100% identical build to the previously released Shiranui Second Phase 3 — Yuya Bridges unit, making it a straightforward color variant with only the molded color changed.

Since there's nothing structurally new here at all, every feature is the same as the Yuya Bridges unit, so there's not much new ground to cover. That said, the Phase 3's distinctive trait of having the great sword and machine gun storage units lined up and plugged into the shoulders one after another is what makes this Shiranui unique.

Overall, it's on the easier side to build among Kotobukiya kits, and it goes together well as a snap-fit without glue. That said, once you finish it and start posing it around, parts tend to fall apart here and there — and while other areas might be okay, the torso section at least really needs to be glued down.

One thing worth noting: the Phase 3 Yuya Bridges unit, which had the same build with just a different color, had joint strength that was practically nonexistent, but this Takara Yui unit is a significant improvement. It seems like they adjusted the tolerances on the joint molds after getting a lot of complaints, and thankfully both standing and action poses hold up pretty well now. ^^

That said, the side skirts, the jump unit at the back, and the weapons stored on the shoulders tend to interfere with each other quite a bit, making it tricky to get the angles right when posing. I think this is less of a kit quality issue and more just the design itself being a bit of a handful.

Anyway, since it's just a simple color variant, I built it without much excitement — but it's a solid, no-fuss Kotobukiya kit that I'd recommend to fans of Muv-Luv who have a soft spot for Takara Yui. :-)
