063AN Ambient

Kit Review

Straight build

The new Armored Core kit that comes out maybe once a quarter is the 063AN Ambient — a unit with an incredibly complex and flashy design, characterized by fin-like structures all over the body.

As you can see in the photos, even as a straight build it shows off a gorgeous color combination and intricate detail that puts it at the very top of the Armored Core kit lineup in terms of precision. The visual payoff right after finishing all those parts together is genuinely thrilling ^^ Kotobukiya kits can be a bit of a workout to build, but there's something really satisfying about how refined and spectacular they look when done.

As you'd expect from a design-focused kit, articulation isn't great — but the ankle joints, which move front and back independently, are fairly flexible, so the standing pose has a solid, grounded feel. The joint strength throughout the whole body is also very sturdy, which means it holds its angles well despite the complex design, and that's a big plus. The only downside is that some of the structures on the back feel a little loose and don't hold their position super firmly — but that's pretty much par for the course with most Armored Core kits ;;;

As for extra features, the over-boost cover on the back can be opened, and the three missile pod covers on the left side of the back open up as well. The assault rifle and laser rifle held in each arm are also incredibly detailed, so even without any extra weapons it still looks plenty cool. On top of that, joint parts are included to connect the separately sold Vanguard Over-Boost, and it locks onto Ambient's back quite solidly, letting you pull off some seriously awesome action poses.

With its massive parts count and extreme color separation that all comes together in the straight build, this is arguably one of the most spectacular kits ever made — and if you're into complex mecha model kits, this one comes highly recommended :-)
