Hannibal PKO ver.

Kit Review

Straight build

The RMC (Real Mechanic Collection) lineup, which I thought mainly released aircraft from anime, has now added a new robot-type entry: the "Hannibal PKO ver." The Hannibal, like its predecessor the Hellhound, is a mech from Patlabor: The Movie 2, and is a humanoid labor just like the Patlabor units.

Now, the Hannibal comes in a white PKO version and a green JSDF version, and this release is the PKO version. They'll probably put out the green JSDF version down the line too — it might've been chosen first precisely because a simple color variant is easy to do. :-)

Since the RMC series openly focuses on realism as its core concept, even the robot-type Hannibal kit goes for a dense, military-style detail approach. The assembly process itself often involves gluing small parts together, and the panel lines and details are clearly going for that military aesthetic.

Because of that, articulation seems to have taken a back seat compared to other kits. The range of motion itself isn't great, and the rubber-covered joints that are a hallmark of Patlabor have just been molded in plain plastic here. Soft parts are tricky to paint, so they probably went with plastic parts out of consideration for painters... but as a result, articulation ends up being pretty limited. Instead, the kit has you swap out the soft parts for articulated parts when you want action poses.

Overall quality is hard to call either good or bad, but the concept does seem fairly clear. At its core, this is a kit for people who enjoy painting or love military-style mechs — if you're interested in snap-together fun and articulation like an action figure, this one's not for you. That said, I do think there's something to be said for a kit with a clear, defined concept rather than a wishy-washy one.. ^^;
