Kotobukiya, known for turning all kinds of game mechs and characters into plastic model kits, has this time released a kit based on the Sniper character from Nintendo's game "Etrian Odyssey." Personally, I remember it as a game that involved a ton of grinding (-.-), but either way, it's clearly a popular series that's still going strong.
The kit released this time is the female version of the four Sniper characters from Etrian Odyssey 4: Legends of the Titan. (Game reference link: http://sq4.atlusnet.jp/ ) The basic setup is similar to your typical Kotobukiya character model kit in the vein of Hoihoi-san.
As you'd expect from a Kotobukiya character kit, the color separation and partial painting are well done, so even a straight build gives you a really striking look. Above all, it's a kit that wins you over with its three-dimensional proportions and style. If you're a fan of this game, it's definitely a "wow" level of quality — and it honestly feels a lot more premium than the recently released Walkure game character kit.
The sniper's bow and arrow in particular are really well done, and thanks to the soft hand parts, you can get a solid grip on them and pull off some great action poses. Alternate parts are also included so you can swap the goggles from the chest up to the top of the head, just like in the game. And like previous releases, you get 4 face parts (with subtly different eye directions) to recreate various expressions.
That said, while the style looks great, posing her is surprisingly awkward. The articulation is a bit limited and it's hard to get the angles just right, so pulling off a dynamic, natural-looking archery pose is trickier than you'd expect. Still, the colors and overall style are so good that she makes for a fantastic display piece in a simple archery pose.
Also, due to the design, her feet are severely tiny — like bound feet — making it completely impossible for her to stand upright (-_-;;). So a stand that grips the legs with pegs is included out of necessity, but the hold is a bit weak and she tends to pop loose at the slightest touch, which is the biggest disappointment. If you get her positioned carefully and leave her alone she's fine, but bump her even slightly and she'll just topple right over..
Personally, she's not a character I have a strong attachment to, but in terms of sheer visual quality, I'd say she's easily top-tier among Kotobukiya character model kits. Highly recommended for fans of the Etrian Odyssey games, and even if you just like the look of her, she's a great kit that's well worth enjoying :-)
PS) I'm a huge fan of The Legend of Zelda on Nintendo DS personally (cleared it multiple times, lol), so next time I'm hoping for a Zelda character kit ^^
