Kotobukiya Sousaishojoteien

Madoka Yuki

Kit Review

Straight build

Madoka Yuki (Momo Sakura High School Winter Uniform Ver.) has been released as part of Sōsai Shōjo Teien, a brand-new Kotobukiya girlpla lineup. This is a series Kotobukiya has been pushing hard with promotions well ahead of release, and it launched with a ton of buzz. To cut straight to the point — it came out with quality and visuals that exceeded expectations.

First of all, the format feels completely different from the existing Frame Arms Girl / Megami Device lines. The build is fundamentally focused on proportions and style over articulation — the torso in particular is covered by clothing, so waist movement is almost nonexistent. You can swap in the flared skirt to extend the leg range of motion, but since the default skirt is fixed, the hip joint range is inherently limited as well.

In exchange, you can pull off poses that feel soft and natural — more like a real figure than a typical action-style girlpla. The molded colors also feel more matte and refined compared to previous Kotobukiya kits, giving the straight build an overall upgraded look. The face sculpt and paint finish are also noticeably more anime-cute than previous releases.

In conclusion, this is probably the prettiest girlpla released so far. The 4 facial expressions are far more expressive than the swappable faces in previous kits, and combined with the 3 highly detailed hair types (long, ponytail, twin-tails), you can pull off a wide variety of expressions and scenarios. Accessories include a school bag and 2 smartphones, and paired with the 6 hand types, there's plenty of room for creative posing.

Articulation is a step down from an action figure standpoint, but the proportions are so good that poses still come out looking great. Joint strength is solid so poses hold well, and a dedicated stand is included, letting you pull off some fairly dynamic stances too. The one disappointment is that the grip between the smartphone-holding hand and the smartphone itself is weak, so it keeps dropping. In my case I ended up putting a tiny dab of glue on it to keep it in place for the shoot.

Smooth assembly, excellent molded colors, stable joints, beautiful looks, and plenty of options — and above all, drop-dead gorgeous visuals. This kit feels like the ultimate girlpla. It really seems like Kotobukiya went all-in and nailed both quality and appearance. If you have any interest in moe girlplas, this is an absolute must-get. :-)
