Kit Review
Straight build
Straight build
Dygenguar has been released as the 3rd entry in the Super Robot Wars exclusive D-Style series, S.R.D-S. Just like the previous releases, only the proportions are SD-style, while the parts count and overall volume are on par with (or even exceed) the regular non-scale version.
First off, the proportions strike a nice balance between chunky, compact cuteness and solid detail — and the satisfying, packed-full feel once it's built is even better than the previous entries. The S.R.D-S Alteisen Riese and Soul Gain both had a tendency to look top-heavy, making their proportions feel a bit awkward, but Dygenguar has volume all around, which gives it a much more grounded, stable look.
On top of that, decent articulation and solid joint strength allow for some pretty dynamic action poses, and the color separation is nearly perfect, so the straight build looks visually impressive right out of the box. You can also swap in a shouting face expression, which is a nice touch.
The Sanshiki Sangōdō is reused as-is from the existing non-scale version. It looks even bigger relative to the body, which can feel a little unbalanced, but at the same time the oversized weapon does give it an extra punch of impact. The one issue is that the compact form of the Sanshiki Sangōdō tends to slip out of the hand easily because the grip hole is too large — probably an inevitable side effect of reusing parts that weren't originally designed for this kit.
If you're a fan of Dygenguar — one of Super Robot Wars' most iconic characters — this is a solidly built kit that's plenty of fun to put together, and it feels like a step up in overall quality compared to the previous S.R.D-S releases. :-)
