Kit Review

Straight build

Sladegelmir has been released as the 6th kit in the D-Style Super Robot Wars S.R.D-S lineup. The basic setup is the same as previous releases — it's an SD-proportioned kit with parts separation that's just as detailed as, or even more so than, the original kit.

It's still noticeably bulkier than Bandai's SD kits, and it even feels more voluminous compared to the original kit. The proportions are true to the SD style with a big head and short limbs, which means the articulation on the arms and legs isn't all that great.

The signature weapon, the Zankantou, is carried over and reused from the original Super Robot Wars kit just like in previous releases, and the gimmick of mounting the backpack drills onto the arms is also reproduced. On top of that, the swappable face with 2 expressions works the same way too.

Overall the joint strength is solid — bordering on stiff, actually — so stability isn't really an issue, but the snap-fit connections are pretty weak in places and quite a few parts tend to pop off during posing. You'll want to figure out which spots feel loose while building and apply a bit of glue as you go.

Thanks to its sturdy build and colorful look, the kit itself is satisfying enough — but the biggest issue has to be the value for money. The S.R.D-S series was already on the pricey side even among Kotobukiya kits, which aren't known for great value, so ¥7,500 for a kit this small is honestly hard to justify.

The original Super Robot Wars Sladegelmir was already ¥4,800, so it's hard not to wonder whether the price really needed to jump this much just because the proportions changed. That said, if you can get past the value-for-money sting, it's a fun enough kit — and since it's a pretty niche release by nature, it'll probably come down to whether it's your thing or not. :-)
