Kit Review
Straight build
Straight build
This is the 1/144 R-GUN — a design so sharp and angular that it just screams "this is a Katoki Hajime design!" the moment you lay eyes on it. The reason it's called the R-GUN is because the unit itself transforms into one giant gun. In the lore, the robot mode is called Personal Trooper Mode, and the gun-transformed form is called Metal Genocider Mode, but... due to scale limitations, the transformation feature isn't implemented.
First off, the colorful color scheme is reproduced really well, making this a typical Kotobukiya Super Robot Wars kit that feels satisfying even as a straight build. True to Kotobukiya's style, the proportions are solid, and as expected from a Katoki Hajime design, it looks really sharp. Articulation is below average and pretty unremarkable, but the overall look is so nice that it still strikes a decent pose with minimal effort.
The R-GUN checks all the boxes visually, but... the snap-fit connections are on the weaker side compared to other kits, so there are quite a few spots you'll need to glue down. You can get it assembled without glue, but the moment you try to handle it, parts start falling off left and right — so this is definitely a kit where I'd strongly recommend gluing. Once you've got the glue applied properly, joint strength is actually fine and parts don't tend to pop off much when you're posing it.
If you're a fan of colorful kits that look great even as a straight build, this one is highly recommended. :-)
