Kotobukiya Super Robot War

Huckebein Mk-III

Kit Review

Straight build

The 7th kit in Kotobukiya's Super Robot Wars series, which started with the original Huckebein, is the Huckebein Mk-III. Since the Mk-II was released early on in 1/100 scale, the 1/144 series ended up getting the Mk-III first.

The kit is quite large — large enough that it feels a bit out of place next to other Super Robot Wars kits. Despite being 1/144 scale, it's about the same height as a standard 1/100 Gunpla, which makes sense given its in-universe height of 21.5m (head height).

The Huckebein Mk-III is yet another step up in quality compared to previous Super Robot Wars kits. It's not just bigger — some structural issues have been improved as well, which means better polycap joint strength and better articulation. There are still a few spots that look like they could use some glue, but for the most part it goes together stably enough with snap-fit alone. Overall, the feel of the kit is getting pretty close to Bandai's Gunpla. That said, the slightly rough surface texture and the molded colors being just a tiny bit off are a little bothersome... though the colors are rich enough that it doesn't look too cheap.

The opening gimmick on the Multi-Tracer Missiles on the back is well-executed, and the color separation on the missile warheads is nicely done too, so the fully-open look is really impressive. (The sheer size of the kit helps a lot too.) The color separation on the small yellow and white sections is also very well done, and overall there's very little to complain about — this is one of the standout Super Robot Wars kits out there.

A few gripes: the Multi-Tracer Missile pack on the back is heavy and tends to fall off, and the Fang Slasher on the left arm doesn't lock in very securely either, so it drops off pretty easily. Other than that, the overall quality is solid enough that there's nothing else that really stands out as a problem.

Considering it's only 600 yen more than the original Huckebein, the gap in size, quality, and parts volume is pretty massive — Kotobukiya's pricing strategy is honestly hard to figure out sometimes..

Anyway, even if you've been burned by Kotobukiya kits before and have developed an allergy to them, this one is good enough to recommend without hesitation. It's still somehow not quite at Bandai's level, but it's not far off either — you know what I mean? Above all, I'd give it high marks for doing a great job of bringing out the beautiful design work of the proven designer Hajime Katoki. :-)
